If you have a copper standing seam metal roof this is the correct collection of ColorGard® components required for your installation.

S-5-B Seam Clamp
Because aluminum and copper don't mix, you will need use the S-5-B brass seam clamp to ensure compatibility with your copper roof. The brass clamp isolates the aluminum components and prevent electrolytic galvanic reaction, ensuring that your expensive copper roof will last a life time. The clamps comes complete with two [2] stainless steel bullet-nose setscrews for attaching to the roof panel and and one [1] stainless steel M8 bolt for attaching the ColorGard® rail to the clamp. Note that the roof panel will have to be double crimped at the clamp location.

ColorGard® Unpunched
Unpunched ColorGard® uses a separate VersaClip to mount the bar to the seam clamps which allows it to fit any panel width. Every section of ColorGard® is 8'0" in length and comes with a splice clip. If you need to cut it, this can easily be accomplished with a hack-saw.

VersaClip
VersaClip is required to mount the Un-Punched ColorGard® on the seam clamps. One per clamp is needed.

SnoClip II
Optional on any roof panel with a rib height less than 2" , the SnoClip is designed to prevent ice and snow from sliding under the ColorGard® bar. Note that the SnoClip II must be installed on the ColorGard® bar before the bar is bolted down. If the ColorGard® bar is already in place, you will need to use the SnapClip.

What Tools Do I Need To Install ColorGard®?

ColorGard® can be installed using basic hand tools the average handyman will own:

  • Tape Measure
  • String Line
  • Screwgun
  • Socket wrench or box wrench

How Do I Know How Much ColorGard® I Need?

We offer a couple of options to determine how much of each component you will need:

  • Call or email us and we'll perform the calculations
  • Go to our online calculator and enter the requested info; you'll get a list based on solid engineering

With either option, you will need to have the following information available:

  • Roof Panel Info
    • Brand name or style (we can help with this)
    • Material: Aluminum, zinc, copper, steel (galvalume or galvanized)
    • Gauge or thickness of material
    • Width of roof panel (dimension from panel rib to panel rib)
    • Height of panel ribs
  • Length of assembly
    • Length of the eave of each roof area to be protected by snow retention (If you have a straight gable roof and you want snow retention on both sides, you would have two assemblies
  • Length of roof panels.
    • You don't need the length of each panel, just the length of the longest panel for each roof area to be protected
  • Vertical Snow Load
    • This should be the "Roof Design Snow Load".
    • Because many existing structures (and new ones) do not have this data, a good starting point is to find the ground snow load for your location. The ICC (International Code Council) has a snow load chart available.
    • You can also contact your local municipality's building codes department and they should be able to provide you with at least the ground snow load.
    • It is important to note that ground snow load does not necessarily equate to roof snow loads, and certainly not roof design snow loads. The purpose of having this information is to determine the appropriate amount of snow retention devices to keep the snow retention device from separating from the roof and/or allowing the snow to slide. It does not determine the ability of the roof structure to support the snow load. When in doubt, it is always recommended that a structural engineer be consulted to determine if the structure is sufficient to support the load requirements.
  • Roof Slope
    • This is the roof slope in "pitch". This is given as feet of vertical rise in 12 feet measured horizontally. (or inches of rise for 12" of horizontal run)

IMPORTANT: While most applications will require a single row of snow retention with an S-5!® clamp on every panel seam, we always recommend you contact us with your project information and allow to us to perform the calculations necessary to ensure a permanent snow retention system. There is no charge for this. Contact us at 770-405-1060 M-F 8am-5pm Eastern, or at tech@rapidmaterials.com
